Listen, acknowledge, refocus.

This week I watched a Facebook Live broadcast from industry leader Lisa Grossmann. She taught us a tidbit from a recent industry-wide leadership conference.

I paraphrase her words: When a distributor comes to you expressing fear or concern, be sure to listen and acknowledge their concern. Too often, leaders simply tell people not to worry about that and get back to work! Yes, we want people to concentrate on topics and actions they themselves can control… but brushing off their concerns is disrespectful.

However, as human beings, we all want to feel loved, appreciated, and respected. And a huge tool in meeting those needs is listening and acknowledging what you heard.

By quickly (but not flippantly) acknowledging their concern, we reinforce the respect in the relationship.

Please remember to pause, briefly and sincerely acknowledge the concern, THEN help the distributor refocus their energy toward actions they can control.

Your respect makes the out-of-control world feel safer.

A leap made with eyes wide open

In March my husband accepted a permanent position in Germany.

We discussed such a move for several years, and then a fabulous job opening became available in January.  So we jumped at the chance.

After our transatlantic flight in late July, we are settling into life in southwest Germany, and I continue to run my network marketing business which is incorporated in the USA.

I will be posting stories about networking in a new language and other business topics in the coming months!

How to build new group presenters

“I’m too new with the company.”

“I don’t have the presentation memorized yet.”

“I’m still polishing my talk. Maybe next month?”

If your company holds weekly group business presentations, it is crucial to train more than one presenter for each part of the evening’s talk.

Even if your main presenter is very good, she or he might be sick or on vacation, unexpectedly. So duplication is important for holding those public presentations.

Here’s the classic situation: you want to train some distributors so they can give effective group business presentations. However, no one seems “ready enough” to step forward into that key role.

Here’s a question that will shift their thinking. “Are you thirty percent ready to _____________  (be the M.C. of the event, introduce a speaker, give the main presentation, etc)?

Thirty percent.

Many more distributors will say yes!

And of course, when they practice with you, give them “thirty percent” feedback. Give them general guidance, while avoiding detailed critique.

The new presenter will gain experience in the new role and receive feedback to help them get better. This will help build their confidence.

If they mess up… well, they were only 30% ready!

No perfection expected, less pressure received.

(and both of you will likely discover, they are much more than 30% ready!)

Consider creating “30% ready,” “70% ready,” and “90% ready” groups in your organization.

Is it inspiring?

One of the speakers explored that question last weekend.

As I mentioned last week, I watched the livestream of The Most Powerful Women In Network Marketing event during the long weekend. I was able to watch most of the Friday daytime and Saturday daytime sessions.

On Saturday morning Diana Ross addressed us via videorecording from the United Kingdom.

She discussed creating an accountability system, including how to reward ourselves when we achieve a goal.

“But what if you are in debt? Should you still spend money to reward yourself for reaching a goal?”

Her advice: If you are in debt, use SOME of the money you’re earning to pay it down… AND also reward yourself. You deserve a reward simply because you achieved your goal. The treat can be a small one. Realize that paying down debt is not inspiring on its own.

Which side of the magic?

I’m not speaking of the fabled Dark and Light Sides of The Force, as portrayed in Star Wars.

Instead I’m describing a common question from children at this time of year.

Does the man in red really exist?

Frankly, the answer is based on the following question:

Would you rather receive the magic… or would you rather BE the magic?

There is joy and delight in receiving gifts from an unseen loving person. Likewise in our businesses, receiving and implementing words of wisdom from a person you’ve never met can get us back on track or even cause a breakthrough.

I challenge you to be on both sides at once. Be a willing recipient of respectful advice that causes you to grow yourself and your company. And also be willing to share what you’ve learned with others, to guide them to their own breakthroughs.

The magic is within you.

“Dave Ramsey is wrong.”

That title startled me with its boastful claim. I watched the video last week.

Thousands of people follow Ramsey’s advice and praise him highly.

So what’s the problem?

Watch the video and see if you agree.  I do.
