What to argue against

We’ve all experienced the pain and disappointment that comes with a failed dream. The hard part is to realize when you are arguing against failing again, not against the dream.  –Robert Kiyosaki

As independent distributors, eventually all of us face the questions of, Why am I doing this? Why is it hard? Should I try again?

and more importantly: Do I WANT to try again?

Dreams push and pull us, dazzling us with their loveliness and sense of accomplishment. But to reach them we must expand our skill sets, a larger audience needs to learns about us, and we must discover we are truly capable of doing and achieving more.

If you find yourself arguing against pursuing a dream, ask yourself if you’re actually scared of failure.

Argue against your perceived limitations, not your possibilities.

Difference and the second question

Different is better than better.  –Tyra “Banx” Banks, personal branding lecturer at Stanford University

Let’s climb into the mind of your potential customer or potential distributor.

We’ve been in a discussion why your company’s product is better than any similar product on the marketplace. So far, yours looks the best to solve my problem.

Now you are talking on the level of uniformity again. You and all your colleagues who are marketing the same company’s products… what makes you different from each other?

In other words, how will your uniqueness help me use the product or build a team?

This is an interesting set of questions for you as a distributor.

When you talk about your unique qualities, be sure to describe them in terms of how you will help or honor the potential customer/distributor.

For example, you might be one of only a handful of engineers in your company. Go further and describe how your background is an advantage to them:

In my (previous/current) work as an engineer, I am trained to pay close attention to details and to teach things methodically. I believe the details are important and I will do my best to help you find the answers to your ongoing questions. Of course, too much detail can be overwhelming, so we’ll concentrate on the basic questions of (how you operate your account/run your business).

From my (previous/current) work as a bookkeeper, I know watching the budget is important. Starting a business requires an initial investment and strategic purchases to keep it running. Let’s develop a step-by-step marketing plan, to earn your initial investment back as quickly as possible, so your business is profitable.

In my (previous/current) work as a computer software trainer, I (taught/teach) people how to operate their computers. I (specialized/specialize) in beginners who were scared to touch the machine. After you watch the training videos, if you have questions, I will take you step-by-step to help you learn how to run the app and web site.

“Different” doesn’t have to mean “top of the heap in the company.” Instead, choose advantages from your other work (or hobby) experiences. Those will set you apart, regardless of the rank you hold in your company.

Beyond the moon

The only limits we have are the ones we place on ourselves.  –Apollo 12 Astronaut Al Bean

I’ve been indulging in my fascination of space exploration this week.

FINALLY I got to watch the new “Apollo 11”  documentary that was released in IMAX in the USA this spring. On Tuesday it was available in digital streaming, and I savored it uninterrupted yesterday morning (while waiting for some furniture to be delivered).

Picture 93 minutes of slack-jawed amazement and good chills running through my body… and that’s even when I know how they did it!

I enjoyed the different camera angles and more of the unusual behind-the-scenes insights.

What rang clear was the emphasis on gratitude for teamwork. How deeply grateful the astronauts were to the 400,000+ people who contributed their talents toward making the mission a success. And how the crew, in the traditional designing of their own mission patch, broke with longstanding practice and left their names OFF. They truly wanted it to be a mission where they were representing all of humanity.

In your business you might be the well-known person of the group. Be sure to acknowledge the many people behind the scenes who make your success possible, both directly in your business structure and all the people who support your life tasks so you can concentrate on growing the team.

A little sincere gratitude can create a movement that surpasses your wildest dreams.

Provide a strong vision, and people will follow. Thank them sincerely for their contributions, and they will rush ahead to clear the obstacles so all of you can reach the goal more quickly.

The Trap of Small

Don’t cut pennies. Grow dollars.  –LYnn Selwa

It’s important to know what the income and expenses are in a business. As Teresa Romain of Access Abundance describes, clarity may not feel good but ultimately it is empowering.

When the expenses are larger than the revenues, don’t spend hours trying to shave pennies off the price of one-time or rare purchases.

Saving that type of money is costly in time to research or comparison-shop the alternative choices.

It reminds me of watching my next door neighbor drive across town (about an hour round trip) to save 10 cents on $2 worth of sliced ham. Percentage wise, that’s a savings of 5%, but a time drain, not to mention the gasoline involved in driving the car. I figured it was a net loss, financially… she surely burned up more than 10 cents of gas doing it.

Respect your budget, and take the time you would have spent on researching (or driving) to send a few more prospecting texts or make a few more calls.

One extra sale can pay you a lot more than 10 cents. If you develop that relationship with your client or team member, it can lead to repeat sales worth hundreds of dollars.

I’ve noticed women seem to brag about how little they paid for something, while men seem to brag about how much they paid— the bigger, the better. Of course that’s based on the people I have observed and might depend on culture, and is not meant to pigeonhole people. In any case, it generates a question to consider… how do you and your friends compete (in a friendly way) about money?

Don’t feel obligated to participate in a contest proving how little you can be.

Is it a warning signal?

Let’s peek into the mind of a newbie.

Yeah, I expect some difficulty when I start a new path. Just like when I launched my current business.

I have a new company, new product type, new sponsor. And something to prove.

But I’m a fast learner… or so I was always told.

So why does a business seem to get harder? I finish one challenge, and another one pops into its place. Where’s the “flow”?

As I coach newbie distributors on my team, I ask myself how to help such a person. And it triggers an important realization: Do I expect the “Right” technique will make my business grow fast, automatically? And am I teaching that mindset either through direct words or by implication?

Here’s the main question for a distributor to ask themselves:

Is struggle or challenge signaling that I’m on the wrong path?

Would it be more helpful to say, I know I’m on the right path BECAUSE things got harder?

Only you can decide.
