Twice as long

“Tell me what it is!”

Those are words that can lead into the Valley Of Death… where you explain, and they interrupt, and you try to answer that question… and your potential distributor becomes frustrated.

In our company we teach people to book an appointment and use third-party-validation to explain the details.

Third-party-validation means a source (someone or something) OTHER THAN YOU. For example: apps, videos, teleconference training calls, tear sheets, card decks, 3-way calls, or 24 hour recorded voicemail messages.

Here is the magic phrase: “It would take me twice as long to explain it than to simply __(watch the video)___.”

People like to be in control… but even more importantly, they don’t want their time wasted!

(and people also like “simple” steps. Use “simply” instead of “just.”)

This is a respectful way to let your potential distributor back down and begin to follow your process.

Plus you are establishing your leadership by setting that boundary.

If they won’t follow your presentation process, they are not coachable… and would you really want them on your team?

Let the music carry you

At this moment one of my colleagues is sitting in a hospital waiting room while her mom is in surgery for the 3rd time this year. And to uplift her spirits, the younger woman is listening to music.

But not just favorite songs from the radio.

Instead, her ears are filled with the uplifting songs written by our CEO. Songs that have been unveiled and performed live at several company conventions, each one matching and expanding on a convention theme.

Your CEO may not have written tunes or raps, but I’m willing to bet you have several songs that are traditionally heard at your events.

When you feel frustrated or exasperated, play one of those. Let it take you back to the joyous celebration that your convention provides.

And let it spur you to greatness.

Trapped in a tin can

What characteristics are important in a teammate?

International Space Station former Commander Chris Hadfield shares some wisdom:

In the Shuttle era, NASA wanted people who could operate the most complicated vehicle in the world for short stints. Today, NASA looks for people who can be locked in a tin can for six months and excel, so temperament alone could disqualify you for space flight.

(quote from “An Astronaut’s Guide To Life On Earth,” pp 39-40)

I realize Network Marketing Is Not Rocket Science.

But both situations emphasize long-term missions.

When I’m presenting my company’s business plan, I ask myself, “Is this an upbeat person with a sense of adventure and willingness to learn? Would I look forward to receiving calls from this person? Or would I grimace to see their text or Caller ID pop onto my smartphone screen?”

Let me clarify, I’m not trying to pick my new best friend. However, I would like to enjoy the time I spend with them… at least, not abhor the idea.

Remember… in our profession we get to pick our teammates. So choose wisely.

Open in December?

The December holiday season is in full swing. Some say this is a rotten time to do presentations “because everyone is busy and stressed.”

But that might be perfect timing.

Think about the times you were thinking about making a change…and procrastinated… UNTIL the pain got stronger than the fear.

Pain prods us to jump into action.

Worrying about the high credit card balances from buying gifts. Frustrated with the “10 lbs to lose… And only 25 to go!” after the holiday parties–and wanting to look fabulous at the class reunion this spring. Sad that the year started with high hopes of a raise at work… and the paycheck reads the same as last December.

Many people live shiny lives of secret desperation. Your polite and confident invitation may be the answer they were silently hoping for.
