Effective leadership?

While I was Skyping with a minister yesterday, we were talking about the nature of leadership in many spiritual communities. I was comparing her experiences to mine as a leader in my network marketing organization.

She mentioned the word “voluntary.”

I thought, “Yes, that’s precisely it!”

In network marketing, we lead groups of people who volunteer to join our organizations.

As “upline” or “leadership line” mentors, we don’t have the typical “command and control” type of authority over our teammates. We can’t cancel their contract with the parent company for taking too much time off. We can’t dock their pay nor demote them because they have a sour attitude about a recent change to the product offerings.

On the other hand, they are not unpaid volunteers. A compensation plan is in place, and they are rewarded for their results.

My biggest lesson from that conversation …. when I’m reading about or taking seminars about “leadership,” discern which type is being taught: command-and-control, or voluntary?
